how to launch a pedal boat

Wondering how to launch a pedal boat? For sure, it’s the first yet crucial step to get a water outing. If you want to become a pedal boat hobbyist like me and my friend Sam, then the first step is to learn how to launch a boat safely into the waters.

The internet is full of different ideas, which might confuse you. Hence, I decided to write this guide to provide some valuable insights about pedal boat launching to my fellow beginner boaters.

In this guide, I have covered everything from launching to docking the boat and all the relevant safety measures you must take.

So, without any further ado, let’s get started.

What Does Launching a Pedal Boat Mean?

Launching refers to the process of placing the pedal boat into the water from a stationary position like on land or dock. This is done when you need to ride the boat and involves a few simple steps.

Overall, using a pedal boat seems like a tough job for a beginner but if you do it properly and learn about each step beforehand then it becomes most easiest hobby ever.

Me and my partner Sam move the boat from storage to the water’s edge when we plan to go boating. While it may seem fun and exciting, it can also be harmful if not done properly.

WHAT NOT TO DO WHILE LAUNCHING PEDAL BOAT

It requires special care as a slight mistake can damage the boat or injure the involved people. I have been through this as a newbie and met a little accident once, luckily I got no injuries.

What Is the Proper Way to Launch a Boat?

Of course, safety comes first; otherwise, you might also end up spending a few days in the hospital with a broken hand or leg. Hence, it is important to launch your pedal boat step by step with extra concentration.

Here are the steps that you need to follow while launching a pedal boat:

  • The first step is to check your boat for any structural damage, however, if you maintain pedal boat with proper care then you wouldn’t have to worry about any structural damage before launching the boat. You should also ensure that all equipment, like life jackets and edibles, is present for your journey on the waters.
  • Now you must back the trailer down the boat ramp until it lands in the water.
  • Once the boat lands safely, don’t forget to check if it’s securely attached to the trailer with proper support.
  • Finally, you can release your boat from the trailer and push it off with your hands. Stop when the water’s depth is enough to let you jump in. Now hop inside the boat and you are ready to pedal through the waters.

How Do You Turn a Pedal Boat?

In my initial days of pedal boating, steering the watercraft was one of the things that gave me a lot of tough times. Even my partner Sam couldn’t get a solid grip on it until we determined the right way through trial and error.

This involves a few technical aspects; hence you must understand with patience.

As their name suggests, pedal boats have pedals just like a bicycle. These components of the vessel help one move forward. However, to turn it, you must steer the pedals with the rudder present on the boat’s rear side.

While careful steering is crucial, you must also ensure to press the rudder gently. Otherwise, it may disbalance the boat, leading to accidents.

What Not to Do When Launching a Pedal Boat?

I have written this section based on my personal experience with pedal boating. These few things landed me in trouble while launching my boat.

Once, I saw my boat had a hole from the last journey. But I was adventurous enough to give it a pass and launched it. Of course, the consequences weren’t favorable, but the lifejacket saved my life again.

Additionally, I highly recommend you avoid launching your boat if the waters have strong currents. You might launch it successfully, but keeping the boat stable throughout the journey would be challenging. This doubles fold the chances of accidents.

Some of the other things that I always ask my fellow pedal boaters is to never embark on a journey without wearing a life jacket. Waters can be unpredictable and proper safety should be one’s top priority.

What Is the Most Important Thing to Do Before Launching Your Pedal Boat?

Although I already covered the things you must do before launching a pedal boat, here’s a more detailed version of it. The first step is to confirm that you are carrying all necessary equipment, including safety gear like a life jack or personal floatation device

You must also carry some food items and drinking water if you plan to embark on a long journey. I definitely love munching on my favorite chips while pedaling through the calm waters and breezy air.

The food is, of course, optional, but don’t forget to check the overall condition of your boat. Its body must not be damaged even if it is looking new. Because a few pedal boats arrived damaged during shipping. If you find any such issue, I highly recommend taking the pedal boat to a mechanic shop for maintenance before launching.

Last but not least, always remember to check the water conditions beforehand. You must understand that water hazards can be dangerous, therefore, it must be taken seriously.

One more thing that I do for safety purposes before launching my boat is to inform my brother that my partner and I are embarking on the journey through the waters. Through this, you will at least have someone check on you in case you don’t return on time for any reason.

Can One Person Launch a Pedal Boat Safely?

Yes, one person can definitely launch a pedal boat without any risk of danger but only if you’ve prior experience. But I would not recommend you to carry out this stunt if you are a newbie pedal boater. If you have good experience in launching boats, then you can definitely pull this out conveniently.

Just ensure your boat is placed on a stable surface before launching it into the waters. A wavy or edgy track can lead to disbalance, especially if there’s no one on the other side to tackle it.

What Does Docking a Pedal Boat Mean?

You may not be unaware of docking if you are just starting with this sport. Don’t worry. Even I got overwhelmed with this term when I first heard it from a pedal boater who shared his pedal boating experience in YouTube videos.

Docking refers to the process of approaching or stopping the boat at your desired location. It could be anywhere, but mostly boaters stop the boat at the dock. Hence it became popular as docking.

Just like launching, you must also be extra careful while docking. It is essential for your safety and to maintain the boat’s longevity. Reduce your speed by a few meters before arriving at your destination. So you can avoid any accidental crashes.

Additionally, aim the boat’s bow towards the dock at a slight angle. It must be positioned parallel to the dock. Now you can throw the bowline in the wind’s direction to prevent the boat from drifting away with water.

Is Launching a Pedal Boat Difficult As Compared to Paddle Boat?

Although a pedal boat is my absolute favorite, I would not deny that it can be harder to launch than a paddle boat. A pedal boat is slightly heavier and larger. Hence, landing it into the water requires extra strength and coordination, especially when launching from a dock or other elevated surface. You can get pro at it with little practice, just like me and my dear friend Sam.

Quick Tips For Dealing with Pedal Malfunctions

Pedal boats, like any machinery, may encounter malfunctions from time to time. Being prepared to address common issues can ensure a smooth and enjoyable boating experience.

Quick Fixes for Common Problems

Stuck Pedals: If they become stuck, check for debris or foreign objects obstructing their movement. Clear any obstructions and test the pedals before resuming your journey.

Loose or Disconnected Pedals: Tighten any loose bolts or connections. Make sure the pedals are securely attached to the pedal mechanism. A simple wrench can often resolve this issue.

Pedal Resistance: If you encounter increased resistance while pedalling, inspect the pedal and chain mechanism for any signs of wear or damage. Apply lubricant to the moving parts to enhance smooth operation.

Uneven Pedaling: Ensure that all passengers are pedalling evenly. Communicate with your fellow riders to synchronize your pedal strokes, preventing uneven pressure on the pedal mechanism.

When to Seek Professional Assistance

Persistent Malfunctions: If quick fixes prove ineffective or if the same issue persists, it’s advisable to seek professional assistance. Consult the pedal boat’s user manual for guidance on contacting the manufacturer or a certified technician.

Unusual Sounds or Vibrations: Unusual sounds or vibrations during pedalling may indicate a more complex problem. Cease operation immediately and seek professional inspection to prevent further damage.

Handling Unexpected Weather Changes

Weather conditions can change rapidly, and being aware of how to navigate adverse weather is crucial for the safety of pedal boat enthusiasts.

Importance of Monitoring the Sky

Cloud Patterns: Keep an eye on the sky for changes in cloud patterns. Darkening clouds, especially if accompanied by thunder or lightning, signal impending storms. It’s advisable to head back to shore before adverse weather hits.

Wind Intensity: Sudden increases in wind intensity can make navigation challenging. Monitor wind direction and speed, adjusting your route accordingly to maintain control of the pedal boat.

Safe Navigation During Adverse Weather Conditions

Head to Shore: If you notice signs of adverse weather approaching, return to shore promptly. Avoid open water during storms, as strong winds and high waves can pose significant risks to pedal boat users.

Emergency Preparedness: Carry a waterproof emergency kit containing essentials like a first aid kit, a flashlight, and a whistle. Be prepared for unexpected weather changes by dressing appropriately and informing someone on land about your boating plans.
